Step Together: A Line Dance Residency - Jennifer Corbin
Step Together is a five-session line dance residency designed for middle school students. During each session, students learn a different line dance while developing the rhythm, coordination, musicality, movement vocabulary, and confidence that make dancing successful and enjoyable. Each line dance serves as both an artistic experience and a vehicle for exploring elements of dance. As the residency progresses, students move beyond simply remembering steps to recognizing patterns, hearing musical phrases, understanding weight transfer and direction, developing movement quality and personal style, and becoming increasingly independent and confident dancers.
Line dance is especially accessible in a middle school setting because students do not need partners. Everyone can participate simultaneously while maintaining individual movement space, and movements can be adapted to accommodate different levels of experience, confidence, and physical ability. Students experience the individual satisfaction of mastering a new dance while also experiencing the energy and connection created when an entire group moves together.
