BIO // An educator for over three decades, Sharon has a special interest in connecting children to both nature and art. Having taught students at every grade level from preschool to college, she has spent the last 14 years of her career teaching 1st grade. As an artist-in-residence, Sharon teaches watercolor art lessons to students in the local schools in the Seeley-Swan area. She has also written and illustrated a series of field guides for children. “Mountain Wildflowers for Young Explorers: An A to Z Guide,” is a user friendly field guide with life-like watercolor paintings depicting 26 flowers common to the western mountains and valleys, one for each letter of the alphabet. “Western Butterflies for Young Explorers: An A to Z Guide,” is an informative butterfly guide book for budding biologists.
ARTIST STATEMENT // Inspired by Mother Nature, I enjoy capturing the beauty and spirit of the natural world. Like many who choose to live in western Montana, I am drawn to the beauty of our landscape – the towering mountains, the dazzling wildflowers, and the plentiful wildlife. With an eye for detail, I like to convey the subtleties of nature.
When I work with watercolor, I am reminded of the freedom of expression and spontaneity the medium allows. The free flowing action of water and paint is ideal for capturing the many moods of nature.
The focus of my work is the flora, fauna and landscapes of northwest Montana. I strive to create paintings that speak both to me and the viewer about the beauty within our diverse ecosystem.
