DISCIPLINE // Music
BIO // Dr. Rachel Petite has played internationally, and taught violin privately for over twenty years. A doctoral fellow, she studied with some of the world’s most legendary musicians. She has also worked as an actor and has had plays presented for staged readings at Missoula Colony.
Passionate about teaching literacy through the arts, she has tutored students in reading after school. Although her expertise and training has led her to teach Orchestra, Strings, Choir, and Band, she has more recently taught both Drama and Music in California as a Visual Art/ Performing Arts teacher (VAPA,) and enjoys engaging students in learning about Math, Science, or History through incorporation of all of the arts.
Given permission by Jack Prelutsky to narrate his version of “Carnival of the Animals,” she has used the text as a springboard for Arts Integrative learning. She has engaged students through reading, play-acting the animals, co-creating choreography, building puppets, and allowing them to create their own animal-inspired poetry.
Ms. Petite enjoys working collaboratively with other teachers, and has been a sub and a parent volunteer with MCPS for a number of years.
