Grades 4-12, Poetry and Creative Writing Residencies, Teaching & Workshops in Schools Available
DISCIPLINE // Poetry/Creative Writing Residencies
GRADE LEVELS // 4-12
ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION // The Missoula Writing Collaborative teaches literary competence, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and artistic joy through creative writing. The Missoula Writing Collaborative brings creative writing instruction to approximately 35,000 children since 1994—teaching them the value of curiosity, imagination, connection, work, and play. We were approximately 24 schools in western Montana and beyond, from one-room school houses in the greater Missoula area to Missoula public elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. We are also serving schools on the Flathead Reservation of the Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Through all of these venues, and with the world as their material, we teach kids to love to write.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION // Our professional writers traditionally work in 12-week residencies, but our residencies are flexible and can be combined with other art forms such film, theatre, or music. They work with classroom teachers to design lessons plans that support learning goals. Each lesson is one-hour long and is broken into twenty-minute segments. The first twenty minutes consists of a triggering exercise (a poem written by a regional poet that becomes an exercise), students write for twenty minutes, then the last twenty minutes the students read their work aloud. After twelve weeks, the writer compiles an anthology of student work that is published. The students also will also participate in a reading attended by teachers, parents and friends. The combination of writing exercises, reading out loud and learning to appreciate the work of fellow students creates compassion, excitement for learning, and students become excited about telling their stories as they learn about writing techniques such as similes, metaphors, and telling details. When students learn the power and potential of language—when they realize what they can express with words—they become not only better writers, but better students, better thinkers, better citizens.
