SPARK! Arts Ignite Learning is all about giving excellent arts education opportunities to every student in Missoula County Public Schools
We believe that the Arts have the power to ignite the imagination, spark innovation through creativity, and transform learning. SPARK! works in collaboration with artists, classroom teachers, university staff, school administration, and volunteers to ensure that the arts are an essential part of every school day.
SPARK! is a national partnership site for the Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child Initiative, a growing network of communities working to transform learning and ensure access to the arts for every public school student.
This year SPARK! provided…
- Over 700 hours of additional arts instruction in MCPS classrooms
- Arts residencies at every grade level K-8
- 25 local artists bringing all disciplines into the classroom
- Opportunities for students to learn content in all subject areas through the arts
- Access to performances and exhibits in Missoula for all grade levels K-8
SPARK! is a collaborative project working to transform learning through Arts Integration, Arts Enhancement, & Art for Art’s Sake.
Arts Integration is the process of using the arts a method of teaching a variety of subjects. From using dance to learn about wild fires to using the visual arts to better understand the anatomy of a plant, arts integration has had a profound effect on students. SPARK! provides arts residencies to every grade level for arts integration. Thanks to a collaboration with the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the University of Montana, SPARK! has also been able to provide training for classroom teachers so that can continue to teach with the arts beyond the residencies.
Arts Enhancement is an excellent opportunity for MCPS students to experience the rich and vibrant arts community right here in Missoula. Collaborations with the Missoula Children’s Theatre, Zootown Arts Community Center, Missoula Symphony, Montana Rep, CoMotion Dance, Missoula Art Museum, Drum Brothers, and the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival have afforded opportunities for students at every grade level to experience the arts.
Art for Art’s Sake allows students a vital creative outlet and would not be possible without the arts specialists of Missoula County Public Schools. We are pleased to report that an additional arts specialist was hired as part of Missoula becoming an Any Given Child site, and we hope to see more arts specialists coming on board in the future.
In order to sustain the arts education work happening through SPARK! in Missoula schools, and to extend our impact to local high schools, we need community support. By contributing to SPARK!, you are contributing to equitable access to arts for ALL kids; you are supporting local artists and organizations; and you are standing in solidarity with others who value the arts in education and will not allow them to fall by the wayside.
Thank you for your support!
