DISCIPLINE // Performance, Movement, Theatre
BIO // Laine has been involved in theater and performance for the better part of two decades, with over ten years of that time working in New York City. Her acting and professional tenure afforded her experience on stage as well as in production, working extensively in devised theater, Shakespeare, Chekhov and Lecoq as well as movement and found space performance. Laine also has five years of experience working in early childhood education, specifically with children navigating processing, sequencing and social-emotional difficulties.
ARTIST STATEMENT // I discovered theater and performance as a child; I believe I was looking for a way to express the things inside myself that could not be said – let alone be given a name. Working with children afforded me the space to see the importance of social, emotional, physical and psychological connection: with others as well as with oneself. Children actively seek connection but may not have language to express their feelings, and society largely undermines their depth and truth by belittling all they might have to offer. Performance gives space for us to see the ineffable and asks its participants to proceed with bravery as well as an open heart. Who better to lead the way in emotional discovery than those in their maiden voyage, braving the tide?
