PROGRAM DESCRIPTION // residencies, workshops, teacher training
In a residency with Kate; each lesson guides the participants into creative expression through breath, movement and awareness. Students learn self-regulation, emotional intelligence, group collaboration and creative confidence.
During the residency Mindful Malas, students learn a poem for emotional regulation, develop movements to embody those emotions and work with clay to make a personal mala (tactile memory bracelet).
Nature based residencies like Arts in the Garden, encourages students to develop observational skills. Lessons utilize the school garden (or playground) to create journal entries based on what they see hear and feel. Revisiting the same spot each lesson elicits a deeper connection with the natural world, fine tuning the observational experience.
Kate’s classes support growth for the students and the teacher by inviting play and self exploration to build healthy, safe learning environments.
ARTIST STATEMENT // Kate utilizes the inherent educational opportunities of our natural world to facilitate students with a personal connection to our environment. Her teaching residencies fuse ecological literacy with movement and visual arts. While leading students through inquiry based study, they will learn not only “What is this we are looking at, Why does it function in this way” but also “How am I connected to it.” and more importantly “How can I have a positive effect in our community and the earth?” Kate believes that in this way, students gain confidence in themselves and as meaningful global citizens.
