TEACHING ARTIST STATEMENT // Heather first began teaching with a flamenco company in Arizona, then in college at the University of the Arts for pedagogy classes and outreach programs through UArts. After graduating with a BFA, she moved to NYC where she continued to teach and perform. Heather moved to Missoula in 1999, and immediately began teaching Flamenco, Salsa, Ballet, Musical Theatre and movement for kids. In the 17 years she has lived in Missoula, she has worked for the University of Montana, Missoula Children’s Theatre, Missoula Community Theatre, residencies at public and private schools in the area and beyond. She was a teaching artist for Young Audiences and the VSA of Montana. Heather currently owns the Downtown Dance Collective and teaches a variety of styles to adults and children alike.
ARTIST STATEMENT // “I believe that dance=joy. To experience joy is to feel confident and free to be who you are in the skin your in. I believe that every person, can move and can experience joy through movement. I have a wide variety of skills that allow me to shape every experience to match my students abilities and energy. With kindness, patience and laughter, we can learn new ways to express the internal landscape without words and without judgement.”
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION // The Social Dance program will begin with Swing dance as our vocabulary to introduce concepts about lead and follow technique, musicality, and specific swing dance skills. We will also use the social dance medium as a way to discuss body positivity, self confidence, communication skills, appropriate touch and kindness. Kids will have 6 classes each year of their middle school career. My hope is that I will be able to come to the schools social dances to give lessons there and help nurture great participation with the teachers and parents, dancing with their kids.
