All Grade Levels, Painting & Sculpture, Large breadth of teaching experience

DISCIPLINE // Painting & Sculpture

BIO // Barbara has been teaching art and craft classes at all levels from young children to senior citizens in a variety of venues for almost 40 years. In addition to teaching English, Barbara taught middle school art classes at St. Joseph School in Missoula for 8 years, and short classes or seminars at a variety of locations, including a series of classes for teachers about incorporating puppetry into classrooms in Billings.

ARTIST STATEMENT // My work draws on ideas from ethnic art and folk cultures from all over the world, using techniques from many different areas of crafts and textile art. I lived in China for two years, and in Vietnam and Hungary for shorter times, and in all those places I had the opportunity to learn about traditional cultures and art, and especially in China, I was able to take classes in traditional crafts. I have greatly enjoyed sharing what I have learned, especially at the Mansfield Center at UM, and at the Missoula Art Museum, where I have been teaching children’s classes for many years. I love the idea of incorporating art with other disciplines.
My artwork is eclectic- I use a variety of materials for my mixed media sculptures, and I paint in gouache and encaustic. My inspiration comes from literature, from world wide ethnic art, from science, from dreams and folklore.
